Albania

Ohrid lake, Pogradec
This deep - to 289 m (!) - rather cool lake of 258 km2 on the Macedonian border, in an altitude of 695 m above sea-level, is a well known carp water - also holding a fine and unique type of trout. It's found not far from  to the Prespa lakes. Only a third of it is in Albania. This is one of the oldest lakes on the planet - and many species of animals are found nowhere else - including some known from fossils 3 mio. years old! "The lake of the living fossils" is it called.

Prespa lakes, Prespa
Only 40 km2 of the in all 285 km Big Prespa lake on the Albania - Macedonian - Greek border belongs to Albania. It's found 850 m above sea-level. The Small Prespa lake of 44 belongs almost all to Greece - but a smal part is found in Albania. Carp are the dominant fish species in these lakes - but not much more of the populations or fishing for them is mentioned in the tourist sites. No doubts, much has yet to be revealed by serious anglers doing a little bit of pioneering on these incredibly beautifull lakes. The bird-life around these lakes is impressive too - including two pelican species.

Scutari lake, Shkodra.
Also called Skadarsko Jerzero, this is a very famous venue on the Montenegro/Albanian border. Two thirds are in Montenegro, the rest belongs to Albania.
Covering a mere 50.000 ha., there's room for a he .... of a lot of huge fish here! How about true wildies to a length of 130 centimeters and 25 kg in weight? - These are frequently tearing apart the nets of the local professional fishermen! To stop fish like that before they reach the sanctuary of the huge lillie-beds, stepped up heavy gear is indispensable! Lines of 0,45 will not be exaggerating .......!
The nature is breathtaking too - as are the pelicans - and the huge stocks of carp!
Earlier, only plenty of small fish were reported from here - simply due to the fact, that the big ones always got away!
With modern gear, this is bound to change ...
