Bulgaria

Unfortunately I can't tell you anything in general of carp angling in this country. Carp has been a part of everyday life in Bulgaria for centuries - or even thousands of years, and commercial carpfarming is very widespread here. The fine thing about this for us is, that noone locally really cares about big carp - it's fish of a more modest size that have commercial or any other interest - as they are definately better to eat!
Therefore - the biggies are certainly there in numbers in many waters - still living the quiet life - untill you arrive on the scene ....
There is so much to be explored in this country!

Montana lake
This 9 hectares lake in the mountains north of the capital Sofia, has in recent years been quite heavily stocked with quality carp to 25 kg+. Some of them are long, powerfull river commons, more than 120 centimeters in length - thrusting 25 kg scales right to the bottom! Also, 20 amur grasscarp to 25 kg+ and a few sturgeons have been stocked. Catfish are also present in the unspoiled water. Up untill now, it seems that the stocked fish are able to maintain their weight in the  very rich water. Coming years will show, if they are able to grow as well - and gain even higher weights!
The water also have an ancient stock, that nobody really know for sure - and the potential of unknown bonus fish is there.
The lake is run by danish angler Brian Westergaard in cooperation with local partners.

A very nice Montana mirror to danish angler Troels Taylor, testing the water in september '06. One of the 9 stocked sturgeons in Montana lake. One of the hard-fighting commons, stocked into Montana - some of the stocked fish are considerably bigger than this one!
