Croatia

Notice!
Quite a few new entries have been added to this page, where I'm not absolutely sure whether the waters  are in fact located in Croatia or in some of the neighbourging republics.
Please correct me, if I'm mistaken!
No offence is ment.

I've only got very little informations on carpfishing in this republic of ex-Yugoslavia - but as I know that very skilled croatian carpanglers have participated in many international carp events, no doubt carpfishing must be well developed in the country!

If you can add to the informations given here, please let me know on info@carphunters.com

Borovic Jerzero
Carp to 34 kg have been caught from this 160 reservoir in unspoilt surroundings. >Internet, www.carpinfo.de, 2004<

Kupa river, Karlovac
The Kupa river origins in the Gorski Kotar region and run through the western part of Croatia, but eventually merges with the famous Sava river. Mine-fields from the civil war used to pose a serious problem to exploitation of the potentials of the river, but while I cannot guarranee complete clearence of mines, they seem not to affect dayly fishing too much any more. (Ask locally!)
Seek out the abrubt bends in the river, where currents ar extra strong - and fish right in the margins of the strongest currents!
Daytickets are available.
A common carp of 27,5 kg has been caught in this river in 2002. Several other big fish has been landed from this river.

Shumbar Lakes, Karlovac
These 3 lakes surrounded by ol oak woods, the 30 years old VELIKO JEZERO at about 300 x 400 meters, with several bays and islands and depths to 7 meters, 20 years old DESNO JEZERO of 500 x 100 meter and depths to 6 ot 7 meters, and the oldest is EKO JEZERO, dating back to the fifties, and around 100 x 200 meters could very well be worth a visit of the travelling angler.
All hold carp - the biggest caught at 25 kg, grasscarp to 25 kg+ - and catfish to 76 kg. However, in the past the lakes unluckily have also been hammered by local anglers eating up many of the good fish, once they became public knowledge!
 - Who can blame them?
 - They had a civil war on their hands for years!
Status now is not very clear to me - but I get the impression, that understanding of modern fishing and Catch & Release is gaining with croatian anglers nowadays.
How many big fish present now is still a question here, I feel - but as it's clear the waters have potential - and the club have inforced total C&R on the first mentioned water and release of any 8 kg+ carp and grasscarp caught from the 2 others, no doubts, these waters will be worth a visit!
Fishing is controlled by AC Korana club, and daytickets, as well as all-year permits are available.
For further info look in the local club's page - these pages are in english.
