Portugal

15.07.03:
Dear Sir,
Just found your web site about carp fishing, very interesting but no mention about Portugal.
You can get a feel for what the fishing is like hear by seeing my web site www.tightlines-portugal.com  and my mates site www.carpasnacionais.com

In Portugal everybody above the age of 14 requires the obligate angling license. It's very cheap - less than 10 € for a year. You can get it from Instituto Florestal, Av Joao Critomo 26, 1050 Lisboa, Portugal.

2 rods are allowed - from sunup to sunset. Generally, nightfishing is not allowed in Portugal - but it seems apparent, that many choose to ignore this, as the risk of being caught is rather insignificant in many places. Very, very few local anglers practice carp fishing with the modern tecniques - and the thought of "catch and release" is almost unheard of in this country.

This is in fact one of the reasons put forward for the lack of informations available on portugueese carp waters!
In fact, carp are present in virtually any suitable river, reservoir and lake - but stories of big carp and 10 kg+ barbel in deep freezers makes deep impressions on the few anglers that practice modern carpfishing in this country.

This secrecy is thus very difficult to come by at the moment - which appears a bit weird, as carp are in fact omnipresent .....
It used to be a bit like this here in Denmark too - back in the late eighties and early nineties - but much to the surprise of some of the most secretive anglers, their deep concern of the possibility of ruining stocks and waters has proved totally wrong!!

No detriments has occured after the waters has been revealed .... but loads of other anglers has benefitted from it.
Most of the more promissing venues are found in the southern half of the country.

Phone-numbers indicated are for calls within Portugal.

Some of these waters are mentioned by name on the above mentioned pages - but with no further details.

Alqueva

Cabril, Barrage de

Castelo de Bode, Barrage

Divors, Barrage de, Arrailos
The World Carp Championships 1999 was held here. Only very small carp was caught. How big the biggest fish were - or what the water has to offer at its best, I do not know. >Média Carpe no. 31 jan. 2000<

Duoro, Rio

Fonte de Serne,

Guadiana, Rio
This big river floating into Portugal from Spain, where it is well known for the excellent carp and barbel population, of course also holds both big carp and big comizo barbel in the portuguese part! Anything else would be totally illogical!

The trouble is, that no further detailed informations are currently available - the ones in the know are affraid to fill too many freezers with the magnificent fish.
Personally I find this excuse of keeping the info to themselves - inexcusable! The river is there to be fished, lads!
Here's some "pioneering" to be done ....

Lucefecit,

Montargil,

Monte Gato,

Maranhão,

Odivelas,

Patudos, Almeirim

Pego do Altar,

Rocha, Barraga de
This some 35 years old reservoir is teaming with natural food for the very good carp population. All commons. Good daytime action - no need for nightfishing at all. >Média Carpe no. 16, july 1997<

thanks!!
Luis Francisco

23.6 kg 22 kg. 22.3 kg 21 kg.

Fantastic fish - thanks for the pictures, though I miss the full story of the catch - and the names of the anglers pictured with the fish! Unfortunately, it appears, that the link mentioned is incorrect - I have not been able to reach the site mentioned. I gather the lake is situated near Alfarrobeira at the portuguese Algarve coast - but I have not been able to identify it.
It could also be located in the Baixo region, where a 15 ha water called Alfarrobeira should exist - as far as I understand near a place called Beja (my portuguese is very rusty!)
